So I had an exam today at 10:30. I didn’t study last night and had planned on studying after Fajr. I woke up late, with enough time to get ready and leave for my 9:30 class. I decided to skip my 9:30 class and study for my exam. So I’m sitting there in my room reading over my notes, when all of a sudden my janoo comes into the room with dadijaan. Of course, how can you study with cute little Hasan in the room!??! You have to keep him entertained, so you put him in front of the Mac with photobooth open…studying…huh, studying, for what??

My nephew’s been in Canada for a week and a half now. We miss him sooo much! I hope he’s having fun there and I’m 100% his nani, nana, and khalas love having him around. Mash’Allah he’s super adorable and has a super cute laugh :) Before he left me and my brother were playing with him. I started throwing a pillow in the air and he just couldn’t stop laughing. He got hiccups halfway through too. :) So I told my brother to grab the camera and start filming :) Here’s the end product. Enjoy! :D

May Allah bless him and protect him. Ameen.

Alhumdulilla, I’ve been blessed with living in a close knit family. Our house is always lively Mash’Allah, especially because of the latest addition, my nephew, Hasan. :) Time flew by quick and I’m surprised at how much he’s learned in 6 months. He can sit (kinda), clap, say “come” with his hand, and even figured out how to work a light switch pad, and turn it on, Mash’Allah. He puts EVERYTHING in his mouth, so we have to watch out for that :) Subhan’Allah it’s amazing to see how babies are able to learn so fast. He’s starting to become very mobile. He’s in the beginning stages of crawling and Mash’Allah his crawling style is SUPER cute!! :D

I made a video of him ‘crawling’ and thought everyone would enjoy it :)

May Allah bless him, protect him and make him a strong and pious Muslim. Ameen.

My Random Checking February 23, 2009

I’m sure you’ve heard about how Muslims have a hard time with security when they go on flights. Personally I HAD never experienced any discrimination of any type. Maybe it’s because the flights I’ve gone on have been international with Muslim airlines :) I think Baba Ali does a good job at explaining what happens. In case you don’t know what I’m talking about, you’re pretty much pulled out of line “randomly” and checked by an officer; a pat down.

Recently, me and my family did take a domestic flight and I got a first hand experience of the “random checking.” I was wearing a beautiful black abiya with a pink design on it, and a pink hijab. I thought I looked friendly. I walked through the metal detectors, no sounds, no beeps. The security guard asked to see my boarding pass, then asked me to step into this clear box, essentially four glass walls. There was a chair in there, so I sat. I asked the officer if I had gone off in the detector and he said no. Actually I loved his response. He made is sound like I won a contest :) “No, you’ve just been chosen for random checking!” like with the announcer type voice. It was weird, kinda embarrassing. I mean people are walking by and just looking at you, like as if you’ve done something wrong. You were standing there with no shoes and being patted down, the lady even had to pat my hijab! I had heard Imam Siraj’s lecture about this and never fully understood the experience. Also, my brother was “randomly” chosen; how random.

I understand the situation and the circumstances; I mean I don’t see why they would pull a little old lady out of line. But still, it’s not as random as they want us to think.

Milk, it does a body good. February 17, 2009

Milk I’ve tried to make it a habit to drink milk on a regular basis. I’ve done pretty well with maintaining it. There are plenty of reasons why you should drink milk regularly. :)

1. It helps in avoiding diseases like osteoporosis, colon cancer and hypertension.

2. Milk can help protect your teeth from tooth decay and cavities.

3. Milk doesn’t put on extra pounds! In fact studies have shown that it can help you to stay slim!

4. For strong bones, teeth, nails and good hair, drink a lot of milk as it is loaded with calcium that helps your body grow strong and flexible.

5. Drinking a hot glass of milk before bedtime can soothe your nerves and relax your tense muscles putting you off to sleep immediately.

yummmm…..i love milk :)

It’s been snowing and sleeting here since yesterday. I think this is the first “real” snowfall for this area. Schools were closed and everyone’s been working from home. Of course universities were open, but some professors canceled classes anyway, Alhumdulilla :) Even though winter isn’t my favorite season and snow isn’t fun to clean up, it makes for some beautiful pictures, even from the indoors :D

“Free, Free Palestine!” January 11, 2009

This is one of the things hundreds of people chanted as they walked down the streets of Washington, DC. A protest march was held today in DC starting at the White House (Lafayette Park) to the Hay Adams Hotel (where Barack Obama is staying). Cars were honking horns, police were silently monitoring and pedestrians were watching in awe as thousands of people marched down the streets of DC. Local news reports said that 10,000 people attended. This was the LARGEST march I’ve ever seen in my life! I met people from as far away as Michigan and heard that there were people from Florida as well! I hope my pictures give a good idea of the enormity of the march, although I doubt it. Some pictures are from the front of the protest while others are from the middle, taking pictures of both sides.

The protest march was sponsored by different organization including a few Muslim organizations: MAS (Muslim American Society), CAIR (Council on American Islamic Relations), American Muslim Task Force and American Muslims for Palestine. The best sign I saw had to be MAS’s main banner in the front: ” O you who believe, stand up for justice!” Sadly I missed getting a picture of it :(

I hope it sent a message to the people in Washington that the world is watching. We want to know what actions the government will take to help alleviate the condition of the innocent Palestinians being slaughtered overseas.

Miss the protesting? Don’t worry, there’s still plenty you can do for the people of Gaza. First, remember them in your du’a. Remember, Allah’s help is indeed near. Also, donate generously to legit organizations. Attend an online seminar and fundraiser by AlMaghrib, partnered with Islamic Relief to help raise funds on Tuesday January 13 at 7:15 PM (EST) www.ilminar.com

May Allah alleviate the condition of the Muslims being oppressed all over the world. May Allah help them to hold on to His Rope and never lose hope. May Allah strengthen their eman and give them patience during this test. Ameen, Ya Rabbal Alameen.

I’ve been pretty busy for the past few days! My sister-in-law delievered a healthy happy baby boy Mash’Allah. His name is Hasan :)

Subhan’Allah it was an amazing experience to be waiting and waiting. There were happy, sad, quite, thoughtful moments throughout the whole ordeal. Alhumdulillah both mom and baby are doing very well. Insha’Allah they’ll be coming home today or tomorrow, and we’re all extrememly excited for that! :)

I think he’ll keep all of us busy for the time being, so until then, I’ll probably have fewer and fewer blogs :)

Here’s a video of him:

What does Finding Nemo have to do with Islam?

While I ride the spin cycle at home I usually turn on the TV. I feel like 20 minutes passes by quicker when I’m watching something on TV. Yesterday I couldn’t find anything on, except Finding Nemo.

Finding Nemo is actually a very interesting movie. I’m sure almost everyone has seen it. The part that I watched yesterday was when Marlin (Nemo’s dad) and Dory got eaten by a whale.  Here’s the part of the movie that I saw:

While watching Marlin struggle to get out of the whale (blue whale i think) was sad, I thought of Allah’s creation. Allah tells us in numerous places in the Quran to reflect upon His creation. It’s amazing how the blue whale is the largest animal on the Earth, however all it eats is krill and other small fish!! To put this into perspective a blue whale can be up to 110 ft long! Their heart is the size of a car! Here’s a diagram and a short clip from Blue Planet about whales:

Krill on the other hand range in size from 1 to 2 cm (⅜–¾ in) (about the size of a pen cap), the largest being 6 to 15 cm (2¼–6 in). Subhan’Allah!! It’s amazing that such a small creature can sustain the life of such an enormous giant. I find it hard to believe that us as humans, eat almost anything and everything, from whole camels to whole cows, while other creations of Allah eat such small amounts and still survive. Allah talks about the creation and how they rely upon Him for sustanence in Surah Hud, Aya 6:

وَمَا مِن دَآبَّةٍ۬ فِى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ إِلَّا عَلَى ٱللَّهِ رِزۡقُهَا وَيَعۡلَمُ مُسۡتَقَرَّهَا وَمُسۡتَوۡدَعَهَا‌ۚ كُلٌّ۬ فِى ڪِتَـٰبٍ۬ مُّبِينٍ

“There is no creature on the earth which is not dependent upon Allah for its provision. He knows where it lives and where it dies. They are all in a Clear Book.”

These animals are a sign of Allah’s Power over Creation.

This part of the movie also reminded me of the story of Yunus (as). He was sent to the people of Ninevah, a town located on the Tigris river. He called the people to the pure worship of Allah alone(Tawheed), however they turned away. As with any prophet, Yunus (as) was a human and had human emotions and feelings. He became impatient with the people and left them without the permission of Allah. He left the town and embarked on a boat. The boat got caught in a storm and the people on the boat with Yunus(as) drew lots and ended up throwing Yunus(as) overboard. He was then swolled whole by a giant fish. Prophet Yunus(as) realized that he had disobeyed Allah and repented and supplicated to Allah. The whale then threw Yunus(as) out onto the shore.

“And verily, Yunus is among Messengers. When he went away towards a laden boat. And cast lots and was of the pushed ones. Then the fish swallowed him and he was blaming himself. And had he not been of those who glorify Allah. He would have necessarily remained in its belly until the day when the people shall be raised. Then We cast him on a bare place and he was sick. And We caused to grow over him a tree of gourd. And We sent him towards a hundred thousand rather more. And they believed, then We allowed them to enjoy for a time.”  [37:139-148]

Maybe living in this fast paced world has made us heedless to the Signs Allah has placed all around us. I think it’s good to stop, take a break and reflect upon what Allah has created so that we may strengthen our eman and increase our love and fear of Allah.

Wow I didn’t know Finding Nemo could be so deep…Hope you enjoyed reading! :)
